The great seal of Virginia is located in the center of the banner of Virginia on a blue background. In the centre of this emblem is a figure of Virtus, the goddess of virtue, dressed as a warrior. She holds in her left hand, a sheathed sword pointing upwards and in her right hand a spear whose point is directed downwards and touches the earth. Her left foot rests on the chest of a figure representing tyranny, who is lying on the ground. Above these two figures is the word "Virginia" and below the figures is the state motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis" which can be translated as "So it is always with tyrants".
