Buying and Selling of the Dutch flag: discover the history and symbolism of the Dutch flag

The Dutch flag consists of three horizontal stripes in red, white and blue. It is one of the symbols of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the country of Europe whose average altitude is the lowest in the world with more than a quarter of the country below sea level.

With a 2:3 ratio proportion, the tricolour flag of the Netherlands is a variant of the original flag of Holland which had been chosen as the symbol of the nation the Prinsenvlag, the famous banner of the Princes (available for purchase on our online store): a tricolour flag with horizontal orange, white and blue stripes, of heraldic origin. This flag had been used as a national flag and state flag between 1572 and 1795 by Prince William I of Orange-Nassau during the period of revolt when the Netherlands wanted to free itself from the control of the Spanish.

The Dutch national flag was adopted in 1937 using the colours red, white, blue, formerly the colours of the Batave Republic, a sister republic of the French Republic between 1795 and 1806, but also a reminder of the blue white red colours of the French flag in force between 1810 and 1813 in the Netherlands. Today, the flag of the Netherlands is both officially the national flag and the maritime flag of Holland. It should be noted that it can be confused with the flag of Luxembourg and to distinguish them the two countries use a different shade of blue: a light blue for Luxembourg and an ultramarine blue for the flag of Holland.
