All you need to know about the Basque emblem!

The Basque flag is called the Ikurrina and is considered a true national symbol for some Basque independence fighters or either as a cultural symbol of the Basque Country, this territory of the Basque ethnic group which is located in the western part of the Pyrenees and which bathes the Bay of Biscay and extends between France and Spain.

This regional flag, on the other hand, is now the official emblem of the autonomous community of the Basque country in Spain. In the French Basque country, Ikurrina is not official but is also commonly used by Basque institutions.

The ancient origins of the Basque flag 

The flag of the Basque Country was created by the founders of the EAJ-PNB (Euzko Alderdi Jeltzalea- Basque Nationalist Party), the Arana brothers in 1894. Originally, it was to represent only the Spanish province of Bizkaia, in the northwestern part of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, but gradually spread throughout the Basque Country.

It was the old Bizkaia crest that inspired this flag in its entirety! The red background was chosen because it was the colour of the background of the old Vizcaya coat of arms because of which it is said to be the colour of the Basques. The white cross was also part of the Basque shield of Vizcaya and symbolizes the name of God in Basque motto as a Christian symbol, so it is a symbol of Catholicism in the Basque country.  The green cross in the shape of a Cross of Saint Andrew was chosen to symbolize the holm oak (Oak of Guernica) which appeared on the old coat of arms and also represents the laws of the Basque Country because the oak was the symbol of the fora (courts) of Bizkaia.

The order of colours on the Basque flag is also important, why? It is literally the figurative and symbolic representation of the official motto of the Basques "God is the Ancient Law" and the unofficial motto "The Basques for Euzkadi (the Basque homeland), and Euzkadi for God".
